About the Center for Gender Equality and Diversity, Meiji University
In accordance with the principles of the Basic Act for Gender Equal Society and other relevant laws, in 2009 Meiji University established the Meiji University Gender Equality Promotion Committee with the aim of promoting gender equality with respect to the working environment for the University’s faculty members and administrative staff. Since then, the Committee has undertaken extensive evaluation of measures to improve both the working environment and the reseachers capabilities.
The announcement in October 2014 that Meiji University was adopted in the MEXT Program to Supporting Research Activities of Female Researchers (organizations) provided an opportunity to speed up the promotion of gender equality within the University.
The starting point for the provision of support for female researchers is the promotion of measures to enhance research capabilities and to create a research environment that takes account of the need to maintain a reasonable work life balance, so that female researchers can balance the needs of their research with their responsibilities in relation to key life events (such as pregnancy, childcare and caring for sick or elderly relatives), which in turn can help to increase the number of female researchers and allow female researchers to reach their full potential. In addition, to further the promotion of gender equality at Meiji University, efforts have been made to improve management systems, including the establishment of the Center for Gender Equality and Diversity, Support Office, which seeks to support all members of the University, including not only faculty members but also students etc.
The Center for Gender Equality and Diversity, Support Office aims to make a positive contribution to the operation of the University, to teaching and research, and to the development of society as a whole, by building on past initiatives to enhance gender equality and taking these efforts to a new level.
